JOINT DECLARATION OF GRAVE CONCERN ABOUT THE SERIOUS SITUATION OF DISPLACED PEOPLE
The non-governmental organizations mentioned below are deeply concerned about the very serious situation that has arisen in the case of displaced people who have been expelled from all services of public bodies after the negative result of their application for protection. As a consequence, their security and human dignity are at stake.
The organizations regret that repeated warnings regarding the consequences of new legal provisions have not been taken into account. There is also great doubt that the implementation will meet the human rights obligations that the Icelandic government has submitted to.
Much of what leaders have said in this debate is misleading, unclear and based on a lack of information about the real situation of the people. The organizations call on the authorities to ensure the safety of this group, human rights and basic assistance through active consultation with aid and human rights organizations.
Therefore, the below organizations call the government to an emergency meeting on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 17.00 in the hall of the Salvation Army at Suðurlandsbraut 72. A special request has been made for the presence of the relevant minister in the government of Iceland.
