Are you a current member, participant or active follower of us here at W.O.M.E.N in Iceland? Would like to become even more involved in the role our organization plays in working on issues related to and for the benefit of women of foreign origin living in Iceland, through volunteer work and activism at an elevated level?
If you are a woman of foreign origin who would like to take an active role and have an effect on the lives of other women of foreign origin in Iceland, we encourage you to send in an application to run for one of the two vacant seats on our board.
W.O.M.E.N in Iceland is now accepting applications for women to run for two vacant seats on our board, at the upcoming elections on November 24, 2020 at our Annual General Meeting. We encourage women of foreign origin who are willing and able to invest your time and energy while sharing your strengths and knowledge with us, to run for a seat on the board.
Board members at W.O.M.E.N in Iceland participate in, and facilitate empowerment projects and lead discourse in various realms of society regarding integration, rights and responsibilities, and active civic participation for women of foreign origin living in Iceland. Through your volunteer work on our board, you will network with people of Icelandic and foreign origin, agencies/institutions, and organizations that share our common goals in working to improve immigrant issues, women’s rights, and human rights. You will also take part in enriching diverse social capacity in Icelandic society.
The annual general meeting will vote on the two vacant seats available on the board. Current board members who are in a seat that has become vacant due to end of their current term, are also welcome to apply for re-election. At the first formal meeting with newly elected members, the board will decide on the division of tasks and functions among the members of the board.
The Chairwoman and the board have the authority to publish resolutions in the name of the association as long as the resolution is in accordance with the association’s basic principles. All board members serve a 2-year term.
What is expected of you, as a board member or alternate?
- To participate in and actively support the projects that W.O.M.E.N are currently working on by assisting fellow board members.
- Be active in creating awareness about projects, disseminating information and promoting participation among women of foreign origin either in our projects or collaborative projects with other organizations.
- Exhibit a willingness to head up and develop projects in the future if needed.
- Be a representative of W.O.M.E.N at meetings and conferences in Iceland and if possible, abroad as well.
- Take at least one shift every 4-8 weeks at peer support on Tuesday evenings with other members.
- Attend board meetings (approximately every 4-6 weeks).
- Assist in moderating social media pages regularly.
- Being an active supporter of the organization W.O.M.E.N through your actions and words
What are the application requirements?
- The applicant must be a woman, of either first or second generation of foreign origin, and you must currently live in Iceland.
- It is important to have a burning interest and understanding of the needs, systems, and rights related to immigrant and women’s rights issues here in Iceland.
- The applicant must be prepared to commit to the responsibilities which accompany sitting on a board of a charity organization through active participation in the organization’s activities and functions, in order to ensure that responsibility and gratification are shared equally among board members.
- Able to read, write, and speak Icelandic (Does not have to be perfect)
- We require that you sign a confidentiality agreement upon taking a seat on the board. Our role in supporting women in our community of women of foreign origin, and working with institutions in the private sector, and at national and municipality government levels is very important. Your commitment to protecting these confidences is essential and an important value at the heart of our organization.
