The main objectives of the project are to promote immigrant women both in the capital area and beyond, to activate them through structured empowerment for participation in the community and to promote the active participation in the social activities.
Additional objective is to identify problems that impede or inhibit adaptation (a.) communal (b.) individual.
This project differs from traditional services to foreigners in the way that women are given an opportunity to meet other women with similar experiences (such as women seeking employment, women who suffer from co-dependency, women in education, women in mixed relationships, refugees), and to get assistance from experts who are their peers.
Two successful full-day workshops have been already conducted in Akranes and in Reykjanesbær. Similar workshops are planned in Reykjavik and in other parts of Iceland in the coming months. Mixed methods of looking into one´s past, present situation and future are used during the meetings.
The project´s evaluation and the teaching materials will be included in a report, that will be available on W.O.M.E.N. in Iceland webpage and send in electronic form to public institutions, municipalities, associations of immigrants and other parties interested in immigrant issues.
The project is financially supported by the Development Fund for Immigration Issues and by Icelandic Soroptimists and its Club in Reykjavik.
It is run in cooperation with The Icelandic Red Cross branches in Suðurnes and Akranes.
