Kæru W.O.M.E.N.,

Here is our winter program 2023. Peer support is back and our team of volunteer is on shift every Tuesday evenings through zoom if you have questions about living here in Iceland, as a woman, wife, mother, or else. Remember, no question is too big nor too small! Send an email to support@womeniniceland.is to book your spot.

Our dear Claudia Ashanie Wilson will again share her expertise with us and discuss divorce & residency rights on the 17th of October in our hall at Túngata 14, 101 Reykjavík. There will be an online option to listen, and write down questions. Don't miss this chance to empower yourself on this topic.

Söguhringur kvenna's last harvest was fabulous, and now it is time for the winter program at the library starting this Sunday! We will gather around music with the visit of the Multicultural Choir. All women welcome!

Kvennaborðið - safe space to practice Icelandic together - will take place every other week-end at the city library, next session is this Saturday. We will discuss on which guests we want to invite this winter to make us discover topics in Icelandic.

We would also like to draw your attention on free psychotherapeutic group sessions for Polish speaking women (see ad below).

Finally, 2 important dates to keep in your calendar this month:

24. October - the Women's strike (see more info below). Equality is not reached yet!
26. October - W.O.M.E.N. 20 years anniversary! We will have a party and celebration!

Hoping to see you soon during our winter program ladies!
Take care!

Kvennarverkfall - Women's Strike 2023

Do you call this equality?

While significant strides have been made since the pivotal Women’s strike in 1975, when ninety percent of women in Iceland went on strike, the core demand for valuing women's work remains unmet. Women continue to earn 21% less than their male counterparts, and occupations traditionally associated with women are consistently undervalued and underpaid. Sectors such as cleaning, childcare, and caregiving are some of the lowest paid in society, disproportionately affecting women. Furthermore, women still bear the primary responsibility for childcare, perpetuating inequality. Therefore in a powerful display of solidarity, more than thirty organizations representing women, queer individuals and workers have joined forces to call for a full-day women's strike on October 24th. This strike, under the slogan, "You call this equality?", seeks to bring attention to persisting gender disparities and the urgent need for action. The strike also highlights the pressing issue of gender-based and sexual violence. In the so-called Equal Rights Paradise we live in, gender-based violence affects over 40% of women - and trans people, disabled women and women foreign origin experience even more violence than other groups. Women's wages are still 21% lower than men's, and non-binary individuals do not receive the same wages or opportunities as them. Low wages make it more difficult or even impossible for these groups to break away from abusive relationships. In Reykjavík, an outdoor gathering will take place at Arnarhóll on October 24th at 2:00 p.m., where striking women and workers from the capital area and its surroundings will unite in the spirit of resilience and determination. Similar gatherings are being organized across the Western, Northern, and Eastern regions of the country. The day will also feature various events and activities women and queer people can participate in, extending into the evening.Join us in demanding immediate action against gender-based violence, the undervaluation of women's work, and the pursuit of true equality. This strike signifies that Iceland's reputation as a leader in gender equality is no longer an excuse for inaction.
